Abstract:

In his editorial of Wednesday, July 27. Jérôme Fénoglio, the director of the newspaper Le Monde wrote: “We are not being hit for our membership of the coalition fighting IS in Iraq and Syria: France only joined it after being attacked“. This statement, which is factually false, helps to shape the feeling that “terrorism” constitutes primary violence. This kind of statement feeds mimetic rivalry (René Girard) and the vicious circle whereby “terrorist” attacks respond to bombings, and bombings to “terrorist” attacks.
